Girls Varsity Basketball Takes over Capac 55-33

CAPAC >> They practiced early Sunday, didn’t have school Monday and then played a basketball game that started earlier than normal in the afternoon.

“Everything’s kind of out of whack,” Armada girls coach John Baerwolf said.

It didn’t matter to the Tigers.

Junior Caitlin Rawlins scored 15 points and senior Sara Lesnesky added 11 Monday to lead the Tigers to a 55-33 Blue Water Area Conference victory over host Capac, a triumph that kept Armada undefeated in the league.

Rawlins had four assists and three steals for the Tigers, who led 36-21 at halftime and coasted to the victory on the Chiefs’ court.

“It was just another game, another team in our way,” Rawlins said, discounting the notion that the Tigers had difficulty coping with the unusual schedule that included an early practice Sunday so that team members could watch the Super Bowl.

“I just tried to keep moving around today because we didn’t have school,” Rawlins said. “It had to keep in mind that this is just another game.”

Armada improved to 8-0 in the league and 1-3 overall.

The Tigers started the season intent on winning the league championship, and their resolve and veteran leadership have held sway, Baerwolf said.

“I just chalk it up to a great team atmosphere,” Baerwolf said of the victory over Capac. “The team leadership has been great.

“The thing right now is, whoever is next on our schedule is who we’re going after.”

Harper Nebergall had six points, four steals and four rebounds for Armada in the game that was the makeup after a postponement earlier in the campaign. Lesnesky took eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Joann Seefried had three assists and five rebounds.

The Tigers led 36-21 at halftime and 48-27 after three quarters.

The game marked the start of a busy BWAC week for the Tigers, who play Algonac on Tuesday and Capac again Friday.

Their first game next week is against Algonac.

The Tigers are trying to stay at least one game ahead of defending league champion Croswell-Lexington.

Armada gave the Pioneers their only league loss on the Tigers’ court.

The teams meet at CL on Feb. 16 in the Tigers’ 12th game in the 14-game league schedule.
