We are finally in the girls basketball conference season, ladies and gents.
All games in a season count, but this time of the season they just mean a little more as every team has its eyes set on the conference title.
For our once-again top-ranked girls basketball team, Port Huron Northern, arguably the biggest conference test comes Tuesday as reigning Class A state champ Cousino comes to town. While the Patriots were the state’s top team at the end of the year, the Huskies topped Cousino twice last year to split the MAC Red title with them as each team went 9-3.
We’ll also be treated to a MAC Gold rivalry game at the end of the week as No. 4 Marysville will travel to No. 2 Marine City in a game that could have early conference title implications. The Mariners defense has been stout so far this season, allowing just 29.4 points per game.
Croswell-Lexington will be jumping into conference play on Friday as it hosts Capac in hopes to start another conference championship season.
One rare non-conference matchup taking place is a compelling one as No. 5 Sandusky of the GTC East will head to No. 7 Richmond on Tuesday. The Redskins will turn around face Memphis on Thursday to continue the GTC East season.
No. 6 Armada – who picked up two wins in the last week over New Haven and Parkway Christian – will be taking on Yale on Friday.
No. 9 Port Huron – who picked up its first win of the season on Dec. 28 – will have two home games this week as Utica Ford comes in on Tuesday and Utica visits on Thursday.
The No. 10-ranked Brown City Green Devils will look for a GTC East win on Thursday as they’ll host Harbor Beach.
