Adam Job wanted to lead by example Tuesday night in Armada’s season opener.

And boy did he ever do so.

The senior guard tossed in a game-high 34 points to lead the Tigers over Memphis, 56-42, in a non-conference boys basketball game.

“Whenever they needed a basket he came through and did it,” Yellowjackets coach Gary Gutenkunst said. “He can score almost at will. He knows how to do it, just clear out and give it to Adam when you’re struggling.”

Job scored 12 of the Tigers’ 13 points in the third quarter to give them a 38-31 lead heading to the fourth.

He finished with 23 of his 34 points in the second half.

“Wow,” Gutenkunst said when told of his second-half performance. “We didn’t have an answer for him. We tried to slow him down and we were worried about Mitch (Ruczynski) too because he’s a good three-point shooter. Those were the two guys we were trying to stop and I think we did OK on Mitch. Adam just killed us. He’s a great player.”

Ruczynski finished with eight points and Kenneth Simmons added six.

“I don’t know what happened,” Job said. “We were moving the ball. I was strong with it. Mitch and me we’re just trying to lead the offense. We have a lot of young players this year so we’re trying to lead by example.”

Job was also 7-for-7 from the free-throw line in the second half after going just 3-for-6 in the first half.

“Adam’s a player I challenged at the beginning of the season because the mental game kind of got to him,” Armada coach Michael Becker said. “I know he can get to the basket and anyone that walks into the gym knows he can get to the basket, we just have to find the right times. That’s where he rose to the challenge.”

Most of Job’s buckets were on driving layups.

“He got those points, but he did it in all the right times,” Becker said. “He did it in the context of our offense and keeping people involved. That’s the dangerous combination we need to have.”

Memphis got 14 points from Dawson Stier and 10 out of Ben Blanco.

“I was overall very happy,” Gutenkunst said. “It’s something we can build on.”

Memphis (0-2) lost to Dryden on Monday.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Gutenkunst said. “We knew that from the beginning. The kids are responding and we’re getting better every time.

“We have to stop the stretches,” Gutenkunst added. “When they’re in the middle of a run we have a few turnovers and that just lengthens their run.”
