CHAMPION: ESSEXVILLE GARBER

Garber made it a historic season with its first regional championship. But it didn’t take long for that accomplishment to get overshadowed. The Dukes brought the hot hand into the state finals and rode it to their first state title. Garber had to earn it, going through the top two seeds in back-to-back matches to finish the quest. With four singles state qualifiers, the Dukes knew they had a solid team coming onto the grand stage. They made it count, qualifying No. 4 to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2009, then defeating Jonesville for their first final four. It got tense from there, with a 12-pin thriller over No. 1 Coloma then a five-pin nail-biter over No. 2 Clare in the title match. It marked the first team state championship for Garber in any sport.
