Connor Pace is loving life as an Armada soccer player.

The sophomore on Wednesday had his second two-goal league game, scoring twice in the host Tigers’ 2-1 victory over retooling Richmond, a 2016 state district champion and frequent Blue Water Area Conference contender that has dominated Armada in recent years.

“Oh man, we haven’t beaten them in a long time, and it feels good to score both of the goals for our team,” Pace said.

“We haven’t beaten them since I’ve been here,” Neal Todd, the Armada coach since the program was resurrected five years ago, added. “And it hasn’t even been close.”

Pace gave Armada a 2-0 lead against the Blue Devils when he converted a pass from senior Nick Todd, the coach’s son, with 30:07 left in the second half.

“It was a really good pass,” Pace said. “I wanted to make sure I got it in.”

Pace scored twice in a 2-2 BWAC tie with Yale last week.

“He has a nose for the goal,” coach Todd said.

Richmond’s Michael Bullock cut his team’s deficit in half when he fired home a shot from the right of the goal, the only blemish on Tiger keeper Stuart Solomon’s sheet.

Bullock scored with 16:10 left, during a stretch when the Blue Devils played more to coach Lance Whitney’s liking.

“The last 15 or so minutes we were pressuring them,” Whitney said. “If we can get this team to play like that all the time, we’re going to be able to turn the corner and win some of these games.”

Richmond is 1-3-0 in league play. The Blue Devils lost a dozen seniors from the 2016 team that lost in overtime in a regional semifinal match against eventual state Division 3 finalist Flint Powers Catholic.

“We’ve gotten a lot better,” Whitney said. “We’re replacing 12 seniors; anytime a team is in that position, there are going to be growing pains.”

Armada has seven seniors on its roster, Nick Todd included.

“We knew two years ago that this Armada team was going to be good,” Whitney said. “They had a lot of sophomores then. They were young and getting better.”

The Tigers are 2-0-1 in the BWAC. The record includes a victory over Capac.

“They’re not used to winning, but they’ve stepped up,” coach Todd said. “We’ve got seven seniors, and they’ve shown a lot of leadership.”

Pace opened the scoring with 38:43 left in the second half.

The Tigers play at Richmond on Oct. 2.
