Varsity Boys Basketball Defeats Capac Chiefs 51-39

ARMADA 51, CAPAC 39

Mitch Ruczynski scored 17 points and Dylan Szafranski and Cameron Hart had 13 apiece to lead visiting Armada to the victory that kept the Tigers in contention for first place in the BWAC.

The Tigers (7-1, 11-2) have one loss in BWAC games as they chase first-place Richmond, which is 7-0 in the conference. Trevor Boers had 15 points and Andrew Sams 10 in the makeup game for Capac, which lost for the second time in league play to fall to 6-2.

“We just needed to come out hot, start hot and keep going,” Ruczynski, who had three triples and 11 points in the first half, said. “This is the long stretch of the season, probably our toughest because we have a lot of away games coming up.”

Ruczynski, a senior guard, made consecutive 3-pointers that gave the Tigers a 21-13 lead in the second quarter, and Armada led 26-16 at halftime on the way to its seventh straight league victory. Ruczynski had five triples in the game.

Szafranski, a senior, made four free throws and Hart, who’s also a senior, canned two more in the final 1:28 as the Tigers thwarted the Chiefs’ comeback attempts.

“We want to go out with a bang,” Ruzcynski said of the importance of this season to himself and classmates. “The last couple of years didn’t go the way we wanted, so we want to make this one to remember.”

Szafranski sank eight of nine free throws in the game. Adam Job scored eight points.

Armada plays Capac at home Friday.
