Track Competes at Regional Meet

The boys and girls track and field teams traveled to Frankenmuth on Friday for the regional meet.  Individual medalists included Ava Baltierra and Drew Sniesak who ran to 8th and 7th place finishes, respectively, in the 800 meter run.  Kayla Norrod threw to a 7th place medal in the discus, and Deanielle Kukla vaulted to a 4th in the pole vault.  The boys 4 by 200 meter relay team of Kyle Coenen, George Hebb, Ben Coubard and Sniesak made a very close attempt at a school record and finished 3rd.  Coenen, Sniesak, and Hebb were joined by Easton Vyt to grab another bronze in the 4 by 400 meter relay.  The girls 4 by 200 meter squad of Mikayla Nowik, Ella Sutton, Claire Sniesak, and Alayna Nowik finished 4th.  The Nowiks and Sniesak would be joined by Brooklyn Khon in qualifying for the state finals when they finished 2nd in the 4 by 400 meter relay.  Coenen snagged a 3rd place finish, and was very close to a school record, in the 300 meter hurdles in what proved to be the fastest regional in Division 2.  He was 2 seconds faster than the automatic qualifying time and earned himself a trip to the finals in two weeks.  Alayna Nowik also hurdled into the finals by finishing as the regional runner up in that discipline’s 100 meter event.  Camden Khon laid down a furious final lap in the 2 mile run to finish second and put himself in the finals.  Vyt leaped 6 feet and left Frankenmuth as the champion in the high jump.  The teams continue the championship part of their season with the BWAC League Meet tomorrow at North Branch, the Macomb County Championship at Warren Mott on Thursday, and cap their season at Forest Hills Eastern in Grand Rapids on Saturday, June 4.
