The Armada soccer team is ignoring the rough spring weather that has many of us grumbling.
“We’ve kind of suffered through it,” coach Ryan Loftis said after the Tigers ignored the elements in a 6-0 Blue Water Area Conference victory over visiting Yale on Wednesday.
Jenna Nikles and Sara Weaver had two goals apiece and freshman Carolina Kopp and sophomore Ellaina Todd added one each to lead the Tigers, who scored five times in the second half as they leveled their league record at 1-1 on another cold and windy day.
“We possessed the ball really well at the beginning of the game, and that was our main goal,” Loftis said. “We had eight, nine corners in the first half. We have to be able to finish those, but it’s good to see us getting opportunities.”
Nikles, a ninth-grader, scored the only goal of the first half. Beth Ruczynski assisted in Nikles’ goal.
Weaver, a sophomore, scored twice in the first seven minutes of the second half as the Tigers went ahead 3-0, and Nikles’ second goal gave Armada a 4-0 lead with 28:03 to play.
Yale didn’t pose many challenges to Tiger senior keeper Annika Prall-Stankewitz.
Armada’s league contest with Capac was postponed Monday; otherwise the Tigers have soldiered on despite the unfriendly weather.
On Tuesday, despite temperatures in the low 30s and a wind chill of about 25, the Tigers nixed practicing in the comfort of the gymnasium.
“We were out here,” Loftis said.
At times, Armada has six ninth-graders on the field at the same time.
“That’s good for us going forward,” Loftis said.
In the season opener, Loftis got a hint of the Tigers’ attitudes toward the game.
“At halftime,” he said, “five of them had a whole bunch of questions. They’re eager to learn.
“As young as we are, that’s a good sign.”
Armada dropped its BWAC opener to Algonac.
